🤷♀️ Vegan Middle Eastern Cooking FAQs
Lebanese food is mezze central. Think of it as the original small-plate party, where you load up on lentils, herbs, and lemony everything. Grab a bowl of mujadara (lentils + rice + crispy onions), slather some Lebanese baba ghanoush on flatbread, or pile up on fattoush and tabbouleh. Warak enab (stuffed grape leaves) and batata harra (spicy potatoes) are also in the rotation-just check for sneaky dairy or meat versions and you're good.
Palestinian and Israeli dishes run heavy on legumes, freekeh, olive oil, and wild herbs. Freekeh pilaf is a sleeper hit, musakhan without the chicken still absolutely works, and sabanekh (spinach stew) holds its own with rice on the side. Makloubeh? Go for a veggie-forward version with cauliflower, eggplant, and potatoes, why don'tcha?
Syrian cuisine overlaps a lot with Lebanese, so you're getting all the mezze plus some standout extras. Yalanji (vegan stuffed grape leaves) is a staple. Fasoulia bi zeit (green beans simmered in tomato + olive oil) comes ready to go. Manakeesh with za'atar is basically flatbread done right. You'll want to double check for hidden dairy or egg-but most of it doesn't need tweaking.
Egyptian food is vegan street food heaven. Koshari is the move-lentils, chickpeas, rice, pasta, tomato sauce, and crispy onions. Ful medames (mashed fava beans) is a breakfast standard that works any time of day. Ta'ameya (fava falafel) makes a great sandwich filler or mezze bite. Lentil soup's in heavy rotation, too.
Iranian cuisine is a little trickier but still worth digging into. A lot of the mains include meat or yogurt, but you can work around that. Adas polo (lentil rice) is already vegan. Mirza ghasemi is a smoky eggplant-tomato mash (just skip the egg), and kuku sabzi (herb frittata) can be made with chickpea flour for a plant-based replica. Serve it all with a heap of sabzi khordan and flatbread and you're golden.
Turkish cuisine has a whole category of food called zeytinyağlılar, which literally means "cooked in olive oil." Two good examples of that are Zeytinyağlı Taze Fasulye Tarifi, and Zeytinyağlı Kereviz Yemeği. These are cold or room-temp veggie dishes, and most of them are vegan by default. Imam bayıldı (stuffed eggplant), mercimek köftesi (red lentil patties), and ezogelin (Turkish lentil soup) all hold up. Dolmas made without meat? Get 'em.
You'd think if it's vegan, it's automatically halal. No meat, no dairy, no animal products-what's left to question, right? But here's the twist: halal rules go beyond just animal stuff. Some vegan foods and ingredients still don't make the cut.
Let's break it down with a few common culprits that seem plant-based but don't always check the halal box:
🧪 Alcohol (yep, it sneaks in)
Some vinegars (like wine vinegar or balsamic), cooking wines, mirin, and even that fancy vanilla extract in your cabinet are alcohol-based. That means nope on halal-even if the end product is technically vegan.
🧬 Enzymes + Additives = ???
UGHHHH. Some vegan cheeses, breads, or meat substitutes use fermentation agents or enzymes that aren't certified halal. Think: rennet alternatives or flavor enhancers made with funky lab-grown stuff, or ingredients processed with non-halal byproducts.
🏭 Cross-Contamination Station
Factory-made snacks or prepped foods can be made on shared equipment used for non-halal meat, gelatin, or alcohol-based products.
