🤷♀️ Vegan Christmas Cooking FAQs
What are some good vegan dishes to serve at a holiday potluck?
If you're heading to a holiday potluck, go for dishes that travel well and win over mixed crowds without needing a "special diet" disclaimer.
A Mushroom Wellington or Vegan Pot Pie makes an impressive, and almost complete-meal-ish main centerpiece: both slice cleanly, hold their structure, and taste even better after sitting a bit. Plus- they aren't weird to non-veg eaters in quite the same way some vegan ham might be.
For something more veggie-forward Stuffed Acorn Squash and Roasted Cauliflower Steaks both look pretty darned elegant with minimal effort, especially topped with a drizzle of Onion Gravy (-you want to avoid the main stereotype non-veg eaters have that vegan food is going to be dry and bland).
For potluck sides, you can't go wrong with Maple Roasted Carrots, Vegan Scalloped Potatoes, or Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese-all surprisingly popular with non-vegan crowds, and comforting without requiring any last-minute fuss.
If you want to do some knock-out hors d'oeuvres, my personal picks would be Vegan Sausage Rolls, Cranberry Chestnut Puff Pastries, or Butternut Squash Crostini. Each one sturdy enough to survive the car ride and still look party-ready -thought the crostini will hold up better if you assemble them onsite.
This is a real thing, for a lot of people (not just those who care enough about animals not to eat them). My wife has a ton of trauma from the holidays of her honestly quite messed-up childhood, so helping her navigate this time of year has become something im pretty well-versed in.
But Christmas really can hit even harder when you're navigating it through a vegan lens, especially if so many traditions feel misaligned or nostalgic in ways that tug at your chest. The trick isn't pretending everything's fine, it's creating small, intentional rituals that actually land and get adopted in your family or friend circle.
Maybe that's making a mushroom Wellington or vegan gingerbread cookies with your kids helping decorate, or sharing them with people who get it instead of waiting for a "perfect" family tradition to feel normal.
Maybe it's stepping away from the chaos for a quiet morning with a hot drink, a walk, or just sitting in the living room without anyone telling you to "smile, it's Christmas." That space to breathe? It's more seasonal than anything on a decorated table.
The weight of the holidays often spikes when everything around you is shouting joy you don't feel. You can soften it by turning your energy toward compassion in ways that actually work for you-dropping off food to someone alone, volunteering, or hosting a small meal with people who aren't going to guilt you for skipping the eggnog.
Veganism is built on compassion, and that includes giving yourself grace when the season doesn't land perfectly. You know what they say about "securing your mask on first before helping other" on airplanes right? The holidays don't have to feel merry to be worth it, they just have to leave room for you to exist without pretending, to breathe, and to actually be in the moment instead of running from it.
